MIT Technology Review has named Monsanto to its 2014 50 Smartest Companies list. The list puts a spotlight on those companies which over the past year made a difference through their innovations by filling a need or challenging others to step up their game.

In selecting Monsanto as one of the world's most innovative technology companies, editors stressed the importance of the agricultural company's work in helping farmers meet the food and clothing demands of a growing world.

"At times it seems impossible to keep pace with important emerging technologies," states Jason Pontin, publisher and editor in chief of MIT Technology Review. "This issue celebrates organizations at the forefront. Monsanto's experience in both the genetic modification and cross-breeding of crops could be even more valuable in the coming years, as agriculture faces unprecedented pressures from population growth and climate change."

When identifying the list of the 2014 50 Smartest Companies, editors noted they looked for those organizations displaying "disruptive innovation that will prove to surpass the competition, transform an industry, and change our lives."

The recognition is the latest for Monsanto which in the past year has received accolades from dozens of organizations including Forbes (World's Most Innovative Companies), Chief Executive magazine (40 Best Companies for Leaders, CR Magazine (100 Best Corporate Citizens), and Chief Executive (2013 40 Best Companies for Leaders), among others.

Monsanto and the other honorees named to the 2014 50 Smartest Companies list will be featured in the March/April edition of MIT Technology Review.
