17 Northeast FFA, young farmer groups awarded $58,550

Farm Credit Northeast Ag Enhancement Program recently awarded $58,550 to 17 organizations promoting agriculture, FFA and young farmer initiatives

17 Northeast organizations are on the receiving end of a total of $58,550 from the Farm Credit Northeast Ag Enhancement Program, a joint effort of Farm Credit East, Yankee Farm Credit and CoBank. The grants, awarded three times a year, highlight Farm Credit’s ongoing partnership with organizations that make a significant difference in the lives of people involved in all aspects of agriculture.

Here’s the list of recipients and what the organizations do:

$12,000: New York State FFA, to support the eastern region National Leadership Conference for State Officers. This conference enhances participants’ leadership skills and prepares them to strengthen the agriculture industry through their FFA involvement.

$10,000: Eastern States FFA Star Farmer Program, for its annual program to support a new generation of agricultural leaders and entrepreneurs, which helps ensure that the industry thrives into the future.

$8,000: Maine Tree Foundation, to support its annual Teachers Tours of Maine forests and mills, which provides teachers first-hand experience in this vital industry to share with students, colleagues and communities.

$7,500: Cornell University Dairy Fellows, supporting this hands-on academic program, which prepares and inspires students to enter dairy industry careers.

$5,000: New Jersey Ag Society, to support its Learning Through Gardening program, that provides teacher training and materials to teach children how to grow fresh produce, and inspiring the next generation of agriculturists.

$2,500: New York State Junior Holstein Association, for its leadership development programs.

$2,000: GrowNYC/Greenmarket WIC program, to provide incentives for customers to spend WIC vegetable and fruit funds on regional food from farmers' markets.

$1,500: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County, to coordinate the Southern Tier Farm Brewery Summit, which aims to increase the knowledge and connections between producers, processors and others in the farm brewery supply chain.

$1,500: Hudson Valley National Young Farmers Coalition, to support its New Farm Tour & Potluck Series, which hosts five new farmer networking events.

$1,450: Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance, for transportation to tour a large, modern dairy and to produce materials promoting the dairy industry’s economic impact.

$1,500: American Farmland Trust, to pilot a New Farmland Protection Circuit Rider program, which will provide direct support to land trusts and municipalities to help identify farmland parcels for protection.

$1,000: GreenWave Seeding Workshop, to support the Connecticut non-profit’s Farm Startup and Farmer Apprentice Program, providing hands-on training and seed for new ocean farmer apprentices.

$1,000: Merrimack County Conservation District, to bring the Food, Land & People Curriculum to New Hampshire to develop partnerships among conservation districts and the state’s Ag-in-the-Classroom program.

$1,000: New England Farmers Union Education Foundation, to support a “Shop Talk” series, hosted by farmer members, to educate peers on regulations impacting their operations.

$1,000: Northeast Youth Sheep Show, to host a premier Northeast all-breed junior sheep show, providing youth an opportunity to show animals and further develop their interest in the sheep industry.

$1,000: SUNY Cobleskill to support the 2016 Agriculture Business Field Studies trip to Costa Rica for students to study international agriculture and ag business.

$500: Genesee County Ag Society, to host a livestock fitting, showmanship and judging clinic to teach youth the proper care and techniques for fitting animals.
