The Robb family of Doniphan will host the 2009 Cattlemen's Ball of Nebraska, which will be June 5-6 at the Platte River Whooping Crane Trust south of Wood River.

This is the 12th year for the successful fundraiser and in the previous 11 years it has raised $3,322,250, 90% of which has gone for cancer research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Eppley Cancer Center and 10% for healthcare services in local communities hosting the gala. Last year, near Albion, $798,000 was raised.

The ball, entitled "Give Cancer the Boot" this year, is held to promote beef in a healthy diet and showcase rural Nebraska in addition to raising money for cancer research, says Deanna Bosselman, co-chairperson of this year's event.

"We want people to have a good time and we're excited to showcase central Nebraska and Nebraska cattlemen," she says. "Cancer touches everyone. Practically everyone has a story about their own cancer diagnosis or that of a loved one. We want fewer of those stories, and we want every one of them to be a successful story."

The host family, which operates Robb Feed Yard near Doniphan, has farmed and raised cattle in the area for 136 years for five generations.

The events begin June 5 with a golf tournament, full-throttle driving school at Motorsport Park Hastings/MPH.

Those who purchase Trail Boss tickets, at $600 a pair, are eligible to attend the Trail Boss Reception and Social at Babel's Barn near Wood River.

County singer Craig Morgan, is the featured entertainer Saturday evening.

Other activities include casinos, style show, art show, live auction, health screening, cooking demonstrations, wine and cheese tasting.

Top Hand tickets, which are $65 each, allows ticket holders to attend events June 6, beginning at 1 p.m., including the evening dinner and concert.

To purchase tickets, contact Stacy Bieck, Bank of Doniphan, at 402-845-6565 or email her at [email protected].
