WV Steer Prices See Ups And Downs In 2012

Steers consistently command a price premium over heifers for the year.

Steer prices ebbed and flowed in West Virginia during 2012 but finished out the year at about where they began, a little over  $140 per cwt. (hundredweight), according to statistics released Mar. 18 from the West Virginia Agricultural Statistics Office.

Average Monthly Steer Prices ranged between $126 and $179 per cwt. during the year. The statistics office notes prices hit their high point in February, when they tipped $179 per cwt. The lowest average monthly price for the year came in July when steer prices averaged $126 per cwt. Generally, prices began to trend downward in March and continued flat or downward until July, then began to trend upwards again. In September prices got above $140 per cwt. and stayed relatively flat through December.

Prices for heifers were down overall over the course of the year. The WVASO notes Average Monthly Heifer Prices ranged between $111 and $146 per cwt. during 2012. Prices peaked in April reaching $146 per cwt. The lowest average monthly price of 2012 was reported in July when heifer prices averaged $111 per cwt.

Monthly price differences between heifers and steers ranged from $11 to $41 per hundredweight with steers consistently commanding a price premium over heifers during 2012.

Yearly marketing of steers and heifers through West Virginia auctions peaked in October. According to auction data, 34% of the steers and heifers were marketed in October. The fewest animals were marketed in July, when only 1% of the animals were sold. In 2012, steers represented 51% of the animals marketed weighing between 500-600 pounds while heifers accounted for 49% of the animals marketed.

Average Monthly Lamb Prices ranged between $110 and $201 per cwt. during 2012. Prices peaked in February, reaching $203 per cwt. The lowest average monthly price of 2012 was reported in November when lamb prices averaged $110 per cwt.

Average Monthly Sheep Prices ranged between $52 and $78 per cwt. during 2012. Prices peaked in February and flattened in November.
