FAQ: I read in Wallaces Farmer magazine an ISU Extension specialist urging farmers to keep accurate yield records of each field for crop insurance purposes. He stated FSA may use proven crop insurance yields for compiling yield history for USDA's ACRE program. I'm not in ACRE. Why should I keep all those extra yield records for each field?

For purposes of FSA program eligibility, it is a good idea to keep separate yield records for each FSA farm unit number. Even if you are not enrolled in the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program now, there may be some future farm program that will require historical yield records. FSA will allow the use of Actual Production History (APH) data that are usually kept by crop insurance units, which often reflects each farm by ownership in a section of land.
However, FSA farm numbers may include more than one crop insurance unit and it is easier to record production separately when the crop is harvested, stored, fed or sold than to try to go back and sort it out several years later.
