The Center for Environmental Farming Systems in Goldsboro, N.C., is a coordinated effort of N.C. State University, N.C. A&T State University and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, designed to extend sustainable agriculture research, extension and education. Its latest effort is NCChoices, a website for the promotion of locally marketed, pasture-based animal production, as well as processing and marketing.

The site gives consumers an entrée into local production agriculture, showing them where they can find the local meat products they desire, whether it be pork, beef or poultry.

The site has a listing of nearly 40 meat and poultry producers (with links to specific operation sites). Another listing features meat processors. Other listings promote links to marketing organizations or to a list of resources and publications.

The local operation links give producers a forum to advertise their offerings as well as the features that make those offerings special. Some producers offer USDA Certified organic production. Others offer 100% grass-fed, hormone free, antibiotic free, primarily pasture fed animals or a combination of those aspects.
