Learn how to sustainably control sheep and goat parasites in a series of webinars and management workshops offered by Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension) this summer.
Both novice and experienced producers will benefit from the information and techniques presented. This program features two webinars on understanding and implementing effective, sustainable parasite control:
July 18 — Parasite biology, risk factors and infection symptoms
Richard Ehrhardt, MSU Extension small ruminant specialist, will identify the parasites of economic importance in the upper Midwest and the risk factors for infection, and explain how to monitor infection.
July 25 — Integrated parasite management for effective control
Ehrhardt will discuss dewormer drugs, identification of effective drugs and ways to slow drug resistance. An overview of control programs -- emphasizing a multifaceted approach using effective drugs, grazing management and feasible plans for infection monitoring -- comes next.
Each webinar session will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Visit here to access the webinars. Both are free and require no registration.
The webinars will be followed by a workshop – repeated in two Michigan locations –where producers can learn how to monitor parasite infection using the Faffa Malan's Chart system and quantitative fecal egg counting:
July 27 — Northern Michigan
The workshop will be held at Larry and Sarah Hagadorn's farm, Johannesburg (approximately 30 miles east of Gaylord).
Aug. 17 — South and central Michigan
The workshop will be held at MSU South Campus Sheep Teaching and Research Facility, East Lansing.
The on-farm management workshops will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Workshop participants will receive a FAMACHA card and workshop proceedings.
Register via mail by sending a check payable to Michigan State University. Please be sure to include the names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of all participants.
