UW-Extension to Host Pest Management Update Meetings

University of Wisconsin-Extension/Madison specialists in weed science, plant pathology and entomology will present the latest information on pest management and biology for Wisconsin field crops at the annual Pest Management Update Meetings at eight Wisconsin locations in November.

Weed management topics include annual field crop herbicide updates, efficacy and fit of pyroxasulfone products, late season weed survey information, and updates on herbicide resistance in Wisconsin.

Weed management topics for perennial crops and pastures include new weeds invading forage crops, benefits of managing weeds in establishing alfalfa, alfalfa stand removal with herbicides, and Pest Management Mobile – a new resource for key pesticide information in Wisconsin agronomic crops.

Plant pathology topics will cover new fungicide products in field crops, utility of fungicides in field crops, head scab and other wheat disease updates, 2013 soybean diseases, and Roundup Ready alfalfa and Aphanomyces euteiches Race 2 resistance.  

Insect management topics include Bt corn rootworm resistance and trait stewardship, impact, management and range expansion of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in field crops, information on soybean aphid, Japanese beetle and western bean cutworm, and Pest Management Mobile – demo of insecticide and Bt trait features.

Speakers at the meetings will be Mark Renz, perennial cropping systems weed scientist; Vince Davis annual cropping systems weed scientist; Damon Smith, field crop plant pathologist; and Eileen Cullen, field crop entomologist. Four hours of Certified Crop Advisor CEU credits in pest management are requested and available for participants at each session.

All sessions start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. Registration and coffee begins at 9:30 a.m. for all sessions. The registration fee is $40. This fee covers the cost of the information packet and the noon meal. The information packet will include the 2014 Pest Management in Wisconsin Field Crops bulletin (A3646), which contains weed, insect and disease control recommendations for corn, soybean, small grains and forages, as well as other pest management reference materials. Additional copies of the information packet will be available for purchase at $20 each.

Organizers request participants to pre-register with the host agent at least one week before the meeting they wish to attend.
