USDA Weighs in on Beef Checkoff Agreement

Vilsack is happy industry is working toward a consensus.

On Monday we reported that the National Cattlemen's Beef Association has agreed to repay the Cattlemen's Beef Board nearly $217,000 to clear up spending discrepancies and accounting errors that occurred during fiscal years 2008 and 2009, and the first five months of fiscal 2010.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA encouraged the cattle industry to engage in a thorough conversation in an effort to find common ground and reach a consensus on how the checkoff and the program should be administered from this point forward.

"I appreciate the fact that everyone came to the table and are looking for ways that consensus can be built," Vilsack. "This is certainly some indication that folks are serious about consensus and there is a recognition that things could have been done a little differently, but all in all I think it is going to make for a stronger commitment to the cattle industry and that's important."
