USDA is asking for public comment on a petition for deregulation of a genetically engineered soybean. Monsanto submitted the petition for MON 89788, a soybean engineered to be resistant to glyphosate.
USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is in charge of granting nonregulated status once it concludes that the organism in question is not a plant pest risk. The Monsanto soybean is currently subject to regulation from both APHIS and the FDA, and Monsanto is seeking to address the regulations with FDA as well.
In order to submit a comment via internet, visit www.regulations.gov, select "Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service" from the agency drop-down menu; then click on "Submit."
