USDA To Resume Complete Milk Production Surveys

New fiscal year ushers milk production surveys back in

USDA's National Ag Statistics Service Wednesday announced the agency will resume milk production quarterly producer surveys beginning Oct. 1, the start of the new fiscal year.

NASS previously suspended the surveys in April after the sequestration forced budget cuts. While the agency continued to release partial milk production estimates, the data was compiled using only administrative data and no producer surveys.

The program will resume with a late September mailing of the survey form to producers and the release of resulting data on October 21. With the return of surveys, NASS will be able to add dairy cow and milk per cow statistics in the reports beginning in October.

The quarterly surveys are used to establish the monthly milk production estimates, critical data for forecasting future milk supply, NASS said.
