The Texas Farmers Union is bringing its 111th TFU State Convention to Abilene Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26.

The convention will convene at the MCM Elegante' Hotel at 4250 Ridgemont in Abilene.

Opening session of the convention will begin at 6 p.m. on Jan. 25, preceded by committee meetings at 5:15 p.m. that Friday.

Friday evening's session will include induction of a new "Pioneer in Agriculture." The evening also will include a reception with plenty of great food and also feature entertainment by the 2012 "Rural American Idols" Clay Mobley, Kadie Robertson, and Rusty Hines.

"We will have good speakers and interesting programs during the convention," Sims says. "One of the speakers will be Claudia Svarstad, National Farmers Union vice president, who will speak the banquet Saturday night."

Dr. Harwood Schaffer from the University of Tennessee's Agriculture Analysis Center will be speaking as well as Steve Maikell, who will report on Texas Education. Other invited speakers will be addressing water and other rural issues.

Policy Drafting will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday with special emphasis on the new Farm Bill, water, education, and health care—particularly the issue of adequate funding in these areas.

There also will be special entertainment at the Saturday banquet. Makenzie Patton, a descendent from one of the Pioneer Texas Farmers Union families will bring her musical group "33 North" to sing for attendees.

President Sims also has promised a pre-convention afternoon of special activities, with prizes.

The convention will culminate with a drawing for a quilt and a progressive auction. Proceeds will go to the Farmers Union Charitable Fund.

Sims says the 2013 Texas Farmers Union Convention will be dedicated in loving memory of Mel Cherry.
