Sustainable Ag ‘Summer Schools’

Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) recently announced a summer full of field days and intensive training events designed to instruct and inspire farmers -- and teachers.

Here’s a brief rundown on the events. Unless noted otherwise, all are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

June 2: Whole farm design and small grain production, Berks County, Tim Bock farm, 379 Dunkels Church Rd., Kutztown, Pa.

June 9: Organic and IPM methods for the vegetable greenhouses and fields, Centre County, Patchwork Farms, 476 Jackson Hill Rd., Aaronsburg, Pa.

June 18: Elk farming for meat and antler velvet, Cambria County, Majestic World Farm, R.R. 2 Box 391A (Blue Knob), Portage, Pa.

June 29: Post-harvest handling for produce marketing, Butler County, Harvest Valley Farm, 125 Ida Lane, Valencia, Pa.

July 7: Equipping the family vegetable farm, Huntingdon County, New Morning Farm, HCR 71, Box 168B, Hustontown, Pa

July 24: Ginseng cultivation, Cambria County, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Pennsylvania Mountain Ginseng

July 28: Innovations in hog production, Montgomery County, Moyer's Family Hog Farm, 136 Cowpath Rd.,Telford, Pa.

August 9: Whole farm design and herb production, Jefferson County, Quiet Creek Herb Farm, RD 4, Box 302-A1, Brookville, Pa.

August 25: Small ruminant fiber and nutrition, Lycoming County, Steam Valley Mountain Fiber Farm, 2304 Steam Valley Rd., Trout Run, Pa.

August 27: Organic soy and corn crops for exceptional organic milk, Union County, Bev-R-Lane Farm, R D 2, Box 217, Lewisburg, Pa.

September 14: Mock organic inspection, Delaware County, Delaware Valley College, 700 East Butler Ave., Doylestown, Pa.

September 16: Vegetable and herb farm tour, Southwest New York State, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Keith's Farm, Westtown, N.Y.

September 23: Sustainable energy systems on the farm, Mercer County, Three Sisters Farm, 134 Obitz Rd., Sandy Lake, Pa.

September 29: Organic vegetables in high tunnels and cut flower production, Lehigh County, Pheasant Hill Farm, 3502 Main Road East, Emmaus, Pa.

October 11: Special small group tour for interns, Lycoming County, Beech Grove Farm, 3410 Route 184, Trout Run, Pa.
