As planters slow to a halt, it's time to get back in the office and figure out that paperwork. For producers that might be eligible for cover compensation under the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payment Program, or SURE, Friday June 1 is the deadline to apply for assistance if you had a loss in 2010.

The deadline is important because USDA reports that the Farm Service Agency will not act on applications submitted after the deadline.

The program, which provides crop disaster assistance payments to eligible producers on farms that have incurred crop production or quality losses, has key triggers. To get coverage you either have to have a loss greater than 50% or be in a county that has been declared a disaster area by the Secretary of Agriculture.

To take part in SURE, producers would had to take part in the Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program, which provides cash payments to producers of noninsuranbel crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to disasters.

The SURE program pays 60% of the difference between the SURE guarantee and total farm revenue. Payments are issued sood after application is completed.

USDA reports that signup for 2011 crops will be announced at a later date.
