Signal Warns Electric Fences Are Down

Stafix Fence Alert lets farmers and ranchers know at a glance electricity is weak or out.

Last month your favorite editor wrote an editorial in Carolina-Virginia Farmer magazine discussing some of the clever knickknacks and inventions that get him excited and that he has seen at the Southern Farm Show in Raleigh. One such device seen on display at the farm show for a number of years is the Stafix Fence Alert. That device is still around and still helpful.

Let's say something has interrupted the power on your electric fencing, so it has little or no juice. What was once a convincing persuader for beef to stay put has now evaporated into nothingness, and thousands of pounds of beef on the hoof can simply walk out the front door to become hazards to passing automobiles on the highway.

SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE: It couldnt be more straightforward. You set the Stafix Fence Alert and clip it onto your electric fence. If the voltage goes down it warns you by blinking. The light can be seen up to nearly a mile at night.
SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE: It couldn't be more straightforward. You set the Stafix Fence Alert and clip it onto your electric fence. If the voltage goes down it warns you by blinking. The light can be seen up to nearly a mile at night.

But clip a Stafix Fence Alert over the electric fence wire and it gauges the voltage for you. If that voltage gets too low a warning light begins flashing, visible, the company says, for up to 1.5 kilometers in the dark (that's almost a mile to you and me). Imagine looking out your kitchen window, assuming that is where your pasture is, of course, and affirming at a glance that everything is fine with your electric fence current. When pastures are more extensive and spread out a quick jaunt riding fences in your pickup truck can put your mind at ease. And you don't have to ride very close up to them to get the picture, either. This would be helpful anytime, but especially on nights after storms.

Two preset voltage triggers can be selected.

The company notes the Stafix Fence Alert is rugged and water resistant. It can be used on any type of electric fence including steel wire and portable "poli" products. It works with all energizers, and no ground wires or external power sources are required.

The battery is a replaceable CR2032 lithium button cell with a battery life of five years on standby or up to two weeks of continuous flashing.

The company can be purchased through a number of companies, including Pasture Management Systems, Inc., 10325 Highway 49 North, Mount Pleasant, NC, 28124. You can contact PMS at 1-800-230-0024. They also have a website at pasturemgmt.com/#.

The product comes with a one-year warranty, excluding battery (check with your distributor for their policy on included battery warranties).
