David Moore, DVM of Kirksville, Mo. will be inducted into the Missouri Livestock Symposium's Livestock Person of the Year Hall of Fame.
Moore was born on his parent's farm southeast of Kirksville. He began his livestock career in 1957 when he started his first 4-H project with a crossbred ewe lamb. He started producing Montadale sheep in the 1960s and has continued for the past 40 years.
As a veterinarian and sheep producer, Moore dedicated his life to the livestock industry. While there have been a number of different species of farm animals on the Moore family farm over the years, David currently only raises sheep. He has become a well-known and respected producer of registered Montadale and Dorset sheep. He has exhibited sheep at the local, state, and national levels over the years and has had champions at all levels. His grandchildren are continuing the tradition of showing sheep.
Moore attended and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine and after practicing in a large animal practice in Illinois for one year, he returned to Kirksville to open a mixed animal practice. He currently owns and practices at Adair County Veterinary Clinic. In 1995, his oldest son, John, joined him in practice. In 1998, the practice was expanded to include two practices, one in Kirksville and one in LaPlata.
Contributions to the livestock industry
During his 39 years of practice, Moore has contributed to the livestock industry by practicing in the areas of dairy, beef, swine and sheep as well as being a livestock market veterinarian.
Moore served on countless committees and boards involving livestock. He is a past-president of the Northeast Missouri Sheep Producers and was a member of the State of Missouri Scrapies Eradication Program. He has also served as Secretary of the Northeast Missouri District Fair Board, a 4-H Sheep Project Leader, and Sheep Superintendent for the NEMO District Fair. Moore is a supporter of the Adair County 4-H Livestock Sale and was honored as an Adair County Friend of 4-H. He was also awarded the Show Me Master Purebred Sheep Producer's Award.
Moore and his wife Brenda were added to the Extension Leaders Honor Roll of the University of Missouri. The couple was also honored as the Adair County Farm Family at the Missouri State Fair. The award will be presented at the 2013 Missouri Livestock Symposium Friday, Dec. 6.
