SATURDAY WEB TIP: Go Mobile

Your cell phone can be a quick window to the Web for commodity prices, news or weather.

The change we noticed was gradual, but over time you've all made the move and today the cell phone is an important tool for communication around your farm. While they don't replace radios, they're a great way to connect with suppliers, employees and family.

As you move to more advanced cell phones you're going to want more information at your finger tips and we're offering that through our Web site. We've created a mobile version of our Web sites that will show up if you try to visit your favorite Farm Progress site using a Web-enabled phone.

Or you can enter the Web address directly by putting "mobile" in front of the name. For example, going to mobile.farmprogress.com will bring you to a version of the site that works with your phone.

Biggest value to most users is the ability to customize the display of commodity prices for your phone. On your first visit you'll see corn prices only, but you can add any crop the Chicago Board of Trade follows, or any livestock index that the Chicago Merc used to follow (CBOT owns the Merc now).

You'll see the customize link when you log in. Select that and you go to a "page" where you can enter the contract you want to see whether "s" for soybeans or "lc" for live cattle. And you can select how many contracts you want to see.

That way, no matter where you are, you can see what the markets are doing - for free.

In addition, you can check headlines - both local and national - and look at weather (including animated radar) for your area.

So check out the Mobile version of your favorite Farm Progress site (this one) today!
