North Dakota and northwest Minnesota potato growers have introduced a new logo in their attempt to strenghten the brand of Red River Valley Red Potatoes.

The Red River Valley has 13 fresh potato shippers and many had been using in house labels, which fragmented the market into many little-known brands, says Ted Kreis, NPPGA communications management.

"The Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, along with Valley Bag & Supply Company of East Grand Forks, Minn., worked with a Minneapolis marketing firm to develop a new logo that could also be used as a brand on a new bag design. After three months of ideas and concepts going back and forth between the Advertising & Promotions Committee and the wash plant operators, a new design finally emerged, one that is simple yet incorporates many ideas, The new logo graphically represents the Red River splitting two potato fields, one in North Dakota and one in Minnesota. The colors used are also symbolic. The dirt between the potato rows is black to symbolize the rich black loam soil in the Red River Valley. The words "Red River Valley Potatoes are a majestic red color to match our famous red potatoes. And finally the phrase "Nature's Flavor" was added to let consumers know that our potatoes just taste better because of the unique soil and climate of the Red River Valley."
