Agriculture is under attack again with a new documentary called "Death on a Factory Farm" showing appalling scenes of animal abuse. Yet the American Humane Certified program has been developed to help producers improve how they raise livestock humanely, and profitably.
The documentary, which will get plenty of attention on the premium cable network, shows scenes that the average livestock producer would find disgusting. The American Humane Certified program is hard at work enlisting more food producers for its monitoring and labeling program to help assure consumers that the treatment they might see on the documentary isn't happening at the processors that make products they buy.
To avoid abusive situations the American Humane Certified program uses a monitoring and labeling program - the first in the United States - that is the fastest growing and most comprehensive.
"The HBO documentary, while depicting grossly appalling treatment of animals, makes the tremendously valid point that American consumers will not stand for animal abuse or cruelty, even if those animals are destined for the food supply," says Tim Amlaw, director of American Humane Certified, in a press statement.
The program offers a three-tiered audit system called True Humane Tracking providing food producers with the highest level of accountability and transparency from the independent, third-party audit system. "Producers who embrace humane care are finding real market advantages and increased margins over those who do not," Amlaw adds. "Farm animal welfare is quickly becoming a key piece of sustainable farming and production practices."
