World Pork Expo begins Wednesday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Pork Checkoff spokesperson Cindy Cunningham says a new carbon footprint calculator funded by the checkoff will be unveiled at the Expo.
"The understanding of greenhouse gas emissions and the impact that we have on the environment has become so critical in our lives," Cunningham said. "Our pork producers will now have a tool they can use to identify the carbon footprint, not just at the farm level, but all the way down to the barn level."
Cunningham says the calculator allows producers for each barn on their operation to understand exactly what their footprint is, what their energy consumption is, what their environmental footprint is and what they can do to better that along the way.
"Pork producers have always been good stewards of the land," Cunningham said. "This is just one more tool in their chest that they can use to really improve what they are doing on their operations and really do the right thing for the environment."
Cunningham says World Pork Expo is an opportunity to interact with National Pork Board members and learn more about the Pork Checkoff.
"In the Varied Industries Building in the tradeshow the Pork Checkoff will have a booth where they will be giving away the new carbon footprint tool in CD form, so be sure to stop by and get your free copy of the carbon footprint tool," Cunningham said. "But also stop by the Checkoff booth and ask a lot of questions. Find out what the Checkoff is doing on your behalf, understand where you are; you can check on your PQA Plus status as well as your site assessment status, but stop by that booth and talk to the folks who are there about the Pork Checkoff.
World Pork Expo is June 8-10 in Des Moines. For more information, producers can contact the Pork Checkoff Service Center. Go to www.pork.org or call 800-456-PORK.
