Minnesota farmers were finally able to make significant planting progress during the week ending May 12, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Statewide temperatures remained below normal, however. Farmers continued to evaluate the consequences of the long winter. Dairy producers are worried about the future of feed supplies.
There were 3.6 days rated suitable for fieldwork, compared with last week's 1.3 days, last year's 4.3 days, and the five-year average of 3.7 days.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 15% short, 70% adequate, and 14% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 9% very short, 30% short, 56% adequate and 5% surplus.
Oats were 33% planted, compared with 100% last year and the five-year average of 79%.
Spring wheat is 19% planted, compared with 100% last year and the five-year average of 65%.
Barley is 8% planted, compared with 100% last year and the five-year average of 62%.
Corn is 18% planted, well behind both last year's 86% and the five-year average of 68%.
Sugarbeets are 50% planted, compared to 100% last year, and the five-year average of 70%.
Green peas are 30% planted, compared with 81% last year and the five-year average of 61%.
Potatoes are 15% planted, compared to 86% last year, and the five-year average of 68%.
Pasture conditions improved slightly to 13% very poor, 20% poor, 45% fair and 22% good.
