Pfizer Offers Bargain-Priced Antimicrobial

Fluoroquinolone Advocin boasts short withdrawal and relatively low dosage per site.

Pfizer Animal Health has released the antimicrobial product Advocin, which the company says offers beef producers a cost-effective alternative for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD).

Advocin boasts a withdrawal time of just four days and a single dose of 2 mL/100 pounds, said J.P. Pollreisz, Pfizer Animal Health cattle technical services veterinarian.

Beef producers will need to work with their veterinarians to determine where the new antimicrobial fits in their operation Pollreisz said, but an obvious possibility is late in the feeding period because of the short withdrawal time.

Advocin is part of the fluoroquinolone class of antimicrobials, which can quickly reach a high concentration at the site of infection.

Some producers already have used this product, which was formerly called A180 and was marketed by Pfizer as a two-dose antimicrobial with a 48-hour separation between administrations.

Pollreisz says Advocin is approved for treatment of BRD only and is not for metaphylaxis.

Further, Pollreisz says Advocin is being launched at a “discounted price,” which is lower than its only direct competition.
