The most significant weeks in a dairy cow's milk production cycle are the weeks leading up to and following the birth of a calf. Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) is offering a one-day workshop on helping cows in this important transitional period, as they face tremendous physiological, metabolic and nutritional changes.
The workshop "Fine Tuning the Transition Cow" will be held Tuesday, April 9 at La Sure's Hall, 3125 S. Washburn Street in Oshkosh. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and five presentations featuring some of today's leading dairy scientists from industry and academia will follow:
"Transition Cow Grouping Strategy Effects on Cow Health" will be led by Dr. Ricardo Chebel, DVM, University of Minnesota.
"CSI: Cow Signs Investigation" will be taught by Tom Lorenzen, Alltech Dairy Specialist, who will provide an in-depth look at dry cow management through freshening stalls, bedding packs and tie stalls.
"Feeding Strategies for the Transition Cow" will be presented by Dr. Elliot Block, Senior Manager, Technology, Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition.
"On-Farm Ketosis Monitoring" will be led by Dr. Gary Oetzel, DVM, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
"Hypocalcemia Update for Dairy Farms" will also be given by Dr. Gary Oetzel, who will explore stages of hypocalcemia and outline steps that can be taken to avoid its negative impacts on transition cows.
