Pa. Beef Producers Summit: What's Up For Cattlemen

Aug. 6 Beef Producers Summit to tap expertise on a chute-full of best management practices.

The Pennsylvania Beef Producers Summit is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Masonic Village Farm, Elizabethtown, Pa. The event kicks off at noon and ends with dinner at 6 p.m. 

Farmers who raise beef cattle stand to gain valuable information for improving their operations. "It's information needed to stay competitive," says John Comerford, Penn State Extension beef specialist and coordinator of the event.

Here's what'll be going through the program "chute" at 74 Amosite Road, that afternoon:

12 to 3 p.m. – Beef Quality Assurance training: Nicole Hockenberry, from the Pennsylvania Beef Council, and Dave Wolfgang, Penn State Extension veterinarian, will cover new certification and chute-side training.

2 to 3 p.m. – BQA recertification: Bridget Bingham, executive director of the Pennsylvania Beef Council will talk about recertification.

3 to 4 p.m. – RFID cattle identification: Dave McElhaney, past president of the Center for Beef Excellence, will cover the nuances of the federal cattle ID program for feedlot and cow-calf producers.

4 to 5 p.m. – Farm conservation tour: Brad Michael from the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Fulton County will lead a tour of the farm's renovated feedlot and conservation measures.

4 to 6 p.m. – Bunk management: South Dakota State University Feedlot Specialist Robbie Pritchard will offer money-saving tips on feedlot bunk management.

5 to 6 p.m. – Pasture walk: Dave Hartman, Penn State Extension animal scientist and agronomy educator, will lead grazing and cow-calf discussions with the farm's 200-cow Shorthorn and commercial herd nearby.

6 p.m. – Dinner: You don't have to guess what's on the menu.

Registration costs $12 per person, covering all materials and dinner. Registration deadline is July 26.

Partners with Penn State Extension in the event are Agri-Basics Inc., Pennsylvania Center for Beef Excellence, Pennsylvania Beef Council and Pennsylvania Cattlemen's Association.
