The OIE has released a new short video explaining its World Animal Health Information System, a five-step information collection and dissemination process that ensures animal and human health.

The video focuses on the system's early detection of animal diseases and dissemination of information for quick control.

WAHIS' web interface makes the available data on animal diseases freely accessible, including zoonoses, arranged by country, region, month or year. WAHIS also provides other types of information, such as animal population figures and the human and material resources of the national Veterinary Services and laboratories, OIE says.

WAHIS builds on OIE's mission to ensure transparency of the world animal health situation, notably by means of the OIE’s 180 Member Countries’ legal obligation to notify cases of the 116 diseases on the OIE official list, or emerging diseases, occurring in domestic or wild terrestrial or aquatic animals, OIE says.

These notifications, OIE says, serve to improve animal health and welfare and ensure the sanitary safety of international trade without setting up unjustified sanitary barriers.

Since 2005, information on OIE-listed diseases in domestic animals and wildlife has been freely accessible to all on the World Animal Health Information System interface.

The video can be found on the OIE website and is available in English, French, Spanish and Russian.
