You don't need to make New Year's resolutions. Nobody ever keeps those anyway. Instead, make a commitment today that you will keep. Select someone in your area deserving of the Master Farmer award, and decide you're going to be the one to nominate them and make it happen.
There are still many Hoosiers out there that when they walk by on the street, neighbors say, "Why haven't they been selected as a Master Farmer?" It's strictly a must-be-present to win award, and you can't be present if you aren't nominated. The Master Farmer program is co-sponsored today by Indiana Prairie Farmer and the Purdue University College of Agriculture.
Nominating someone is as easy as visiting the Website at: www.farmprogress.com, looking under 'More Indiana Prairie Farmer' and finding the Master Farmer tab. There is a form there. Completed applications are due Feb. 15, 2012 (postmark). Sorry, we're not set up to handle the form being field electronically.
One reason is because to have an effective nomination, you also need six letters of support from neighbors or community leaders who also respect and support the consideration of your candidate as a master farmer. If you can't find what you need on the Website, email: email@example.com. If you have questions about how to complete the process, call 317-738-0565.
This year's awards will be represented in conjunction with the Indiana Farm Management Tour evening program. For the first time, it was tried last year. Record crowds attended both the tour and the Master Farmer ceremony. The event was held in Vincennes in 2011. It will be in northern Indiana this year. Exact tour stops and dates have not yet been announced. Look for the tour to be during the last 10 days of June. It's tentatively scheduled for St. Joseph and Marshall Counties.
Nominees for the award can come from anywhere in the state. Watch for further details coming soon.
