With a winning essay, a Mayfield, Ky., farmer drives away with the Grand Prize.

During the 2013 Farm Progress Show, Farm Progress and Arctic Cat teamed up for a 'Why I Love Farming' Contest and the winner was named in August. David "Kent" Payne, Mayfield, Ky., is the proud owner of a new Arctic 700 XTX side-by-side utility vehicle.

Payne was in the field when Farm Progress caught up with him to offer the news. He came out on top of a stiff competition that was tough on the editors judging entries. And Payne already has the machine at work on his farm.

In his essay - limited to 300 words or less - Payne shared that as a fourth-generation farmer he did have a choice and he "chose farming for the sincere love of the land, the freshness in the morning air, the smell of freshly turned soil." From the thrill of "watching seed grow" to the lessons of life that he has been able to teach his children on the farm, Payne showed why he loves this business called agriculture.

A WINNER: David Kent Payne is the winner of a new Arctic Cat 700 XTX thanks to his essay telling why he loves farming.
