The 2012 Tree Care Workshops offered in North Platte, Hastings, Norfolk and Omaha in March, and in Lincoln in April, will address some of the challenges involved in growing trees and other landscape plants in Nebraska.
"It's been a tough winter with lots of damaged trees, and there are some major disease and insect threats on the horizon. We've also found that communities are thinking more long-term about woody plant selection, landscape design and sustainability" says Eric Berg, Nebraska Forest Service community forestry and sustainable landscapes program leader.
Tree Care Workshops will be offered from 8-3 p.m. March 14 in North Platte, March 15 in Hastings, March 27 in Norfolk, March 29 in Omaha and April 3 in Lincoln. The workshops will offer regional recommendations on evergreens and deciduous trees, best management practices for trees and landscapes, updates on issues in green infrastructure and forest health and opportunities to "Gets Kids Outside!"
The workshops are developed for public works employees, landscape anagers/curators, tree board volunteers, arborists, nursery professionals and related professionals from the green industry. Participants can earn Continuing Education Units from the International Society of Arboriculture and Nebraska Arborists Association for attending the workshops.
Registration is $40 per person through March 4 ($10 fee added for registrations after March 4).
There is a $5 discount for students, master gardeners, tree board volunteers and NAA, NSA, NNLA and ISA members. Lunch is not included.
The Tree Care Workshops are sponsored by the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Inc. Workshops are supported in part by a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and are held in cooperation with Central Community College-Hastings, North Platte Community College and Northeast Community College. Information and registration forms are online at the Nebraska Forest Service website (nfs.unl.edu) and from your Nebraska Forest Service district forester (www.nfs.unl.edu/NFSdistricts.asp).
