Beef producers from across the state will convene Dec. 5-7 for the 2012 annual convention of the Nebraska Cattlemen. It will be held in Kearney at the Holiday Inn.

Members of Nebraska Cattlemen have the opportunity to participate in discussions in council and committee meetings, discussions which help shape the direction and policy of the organization for the coming year.

As in past years, the convention will be packed with educational opportunities, beginning with the Cattlemen's College on the afternoon of Dec. 5.

The next day, Dec. 6, the opening general session will begin at 9 a.m.

That will be followed by Nebraska Cattlemen council meetings. The four councils are cow-calf, farmer-stockmen, feedlot and seedstock. Among the topics to be discussed are beef quality assurance, economic outlook, animal disease traceability, brand statutes and taxes.

Also that day is the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation lunch, followed by the Nebraska Cattlemen committee meetings in the afternoon. Committees include animal health and nutrition, brand and property rights, education, marketing and commerce, natural resources and environment, and taxation.

A highlight of the marketing and commerce committee will be the Nebraska Cattlemen's beef checkoff task force report, dealing with the concept of a state-based beef checkoff.

The 2012 convention will feature the following speakers: Wyatt DeJong, 2010-2011 National FFA central region vice president; Baxter Black, cowboy poet; and J.D. Alexander, 2012 president of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and cattle feeder from Pilger.

NC's annual banquet will take place at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 6, at which inductees into the NC Hall of Fame will be announced.

The annual business meeting, where NC will set policy on various issues, will be Friday, Dec. 7.

There will also be a trade show as part of the convention.
