Climate change, new farm bill and rural communities are topics at annual convention, Dec. 5-6.

The theme of the Dec. 5-6 Nebraska Farmers Union convention is "Changing the Course of History for the Next 100 Years." The gathering will take place at the Ramada Inn in Kearney.

 "This year's convention will celebrate our 100 years of accomplishments and service to family farm and ranch agriculture and their rural communities," says John Hansen, NeFU president.

Some of the speakers are Gov. Dave Heineman, the Dec. 5 luncheon speaker; Don Wilhite, UNL professor discussing climate change and its impact on Nebraska; Renee Fray, executive director of the Open Sky Policy Institute discussing K-12 funding in Nebraska; and Dan Steinkruger, executive director of the USDA Nebraska Farm Service Agency who will report on the Farm Bill options.

Other speakers are Larson, CEO of the Nebraska Rural Radio Association; Jeff Downing, general manager of the Midwest Agency, LLP; and Stephene Moore, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services regional director for four Midwest states, including Nebraska, who will review the federal Affordable Care Act. 

A panel discussion of state senators will consist of Danielle Conrad of Lincoln, Annette Dubas of Fullerton, Ken Haar of Malcolm, and Norm Wallman of Cortland.

The Friday evening banquet keynote speaker will be Chuck Hassebrook, former director of the Center for Rural Affairs based in Lyons. 

Registration costs are $35 and opens at 8 a.m. each morning. Convention begins at 9a.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday
