Like their peers across the U.S., Carolina-Virginia soybean and cotton farmers can be stymied with early season fungal diseases in their fields. But some new products that can help are on the way.

Monsanto will introduce new Acceleron Seed Treatment Products in 2013 that will help growers defend against diseases that cause poor emergence and poor stands. Monsanto calls these products a 'new generation' fungicide and they can be good for both soybeans and cotton.

The seed treatments have multiple modes of action which allows them to deliver both more complete and more consistent disease protection. Monsanto notes the Seed Treatment Products offer:

• A new active ingredient with unprecedented defense against Rhizoctonia and Fusarium.

• Continuous protection from seed and seedling diseases.

• Broad-spectrum insect protection.

Davie Wilson, Monsanto Seed Treatment Product Development manager, says, "Acceleron Seed Treatment Products with the new generation fungicide, in combination with other management practices, can help protect against these damaging seedling diseases, enabling farmers to achieve more uniform stands, higher yield potential and better return on investment. "

This season Monsanto is continuing to test the products in field trials. The company wants to compare performance of total stand development, stand development and total stand survival, vigor enhancement and yield.

Researchers are using time-lapse photography in some plots to record performance in emergence and early-season insect protection.

Acceleron Seed Treatment Products for soybeans are designed to complement and help maximize the performance potential of Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans. The company notes the products provide an advantage with improved early-season vigor and stand establishment and offer protection from seed and seedling diseases, as well as early season pests.

Farmers are urged to contact seed representatives or agriculture retailers for additional information. They can also visit on the Internet.
