Michigan Corn Production Predicted To Be Up 25 Bushels Per Acre Over Last Year

Nationally corn production on track to set a new record production for the U.S.

Cool, dry conditions in the month of August have slowed development, but have had minimal impact on the forecast yield in Michigan as of September 1.

Corn and sugarbeets are unchanged from last month, while the expected  soybean yield dropped 2 bushels from the previous forecast, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA,

NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

According to a NASS Crop Production Report conditions as of Sept. 1, include:

  • The average corn yield in Michigan is expected to be 158 bushels per acre, up 25 bushels from 2012.
  • For soybeans, a yield of 43 bushels per acre is expected, a 2 bushel decrease from last month's estimate. 
  • Sugarbeet producers expect a yield of 25 bushels per acre, down 4 bushels from 2012.
  • Nationally, corn production is forecast at 13.8 billion bushels, up less than 1% from the August forecast and up 28% from 2012. If realized, this will be a new record production for the United States.
  • Based on conditions as of September 1, corn yields are expected to average 155.3 bushels per acre, up 0.9 bushels from the August forecast and 31.9 bushels above the 2012 average. If realized, this will be the highest average yield since 2009. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 89.1 million acres, unchanged from the August forecast but up 2% from 2012.
  • In the U.S., soybean production is forecast at 3.15 billion bushels, down 3% from August but up 4% from last year. If realized, production will be the fourth largest on record. Based on Sept. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.2 bushels per acre, down 1.4 bushels from last month but up 1.6 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 76.4 million acres, unchanged from August but up slightly from 2012.
  • For the country, production of sugarbeets for the 2013 crop year is forecast at 30.9 million tons, down 12% from last year. Producers expect to harvest 1.18 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast
