Alaska Farmers Union state president will speak about trip to Zambia and also about Alaskan agriculture.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. with the State Board of Director's meeting. Later that evening, at 7 p.m., Bob Schumaker, the Alaska Farmers Union state president, will talk about his experiences traveling to the African nation of Zambia through the National Farmers Union's partnership with the National Cooperative Business Association's Farmer-to-Farmer program. The program seeks to enhance agriculture and rural life in underdeveloped nations. Schumaker will also speak on agriculture and rural live in Alaska.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, the morning will include presentations by Chandler Goulde, National Farmers Union V.P. for Governmental Relations, and Kyle Chase, regional manager for Hastings Mutual Insurance Company. Senator Debbie Stabenow has also been invited.

There will be open discussions regarding establishment/reaffirmation of MFU policy statements, as well as a review of the MFU By-Laws. A formal luncheon is planned for the noon hour.

Although MFU is celebrating 80 years, the National Farmers Union has been in continuous existence since 1902 and now has nearly 250,000 family farm members.

The National Farmers Union is not affiliated with organized labor. It has used the term

"union," meaning "united effort," since its inception. It does, however, work closely with organized labor and consumer groups, as well as other farm organizations.

Member services, communications, cooperative development and educational programs are provided by the organization to assist state organizations.

The National Farmers Union coordinates federal governmental advocacy on behalf of the organization. Its staff members carefully monitor legislation and government regulations that affect family agriculture. Farmers Union has offices located in 26 states, serving a total of 32 states.
