The Michigan Corn Growers Association (MCGA) has announced the recipients of the 2013 MCGA scholarship award program. This year, the MCGA awarded nearly $9,500 in scholarships to 15 talented students throughout Michigan.
The MCGA scholarship committee consisted of board members: Ed Breitmeyer, committee chair and a corn grower from Buckley; Alvin Ferguson, MCGA secretary and a corn grower from Allenton; and Dan Cable, a corn grower from Maybee.
"We received many scholarship applications and were very impressed by the high caliber of the students applying," Breitmeyer says. "Serving on the MCGA scholarship committee is very rewarding. We get the chance to meet the students who are the future of agriculture and this country. The only downside is deciding which ones will receive scholarships."
Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded a MCGA scholarship for the 2013/2014 school year:
High School Seniors: Brandon Bauer, Reese; Alyssa Briolat, Ubly; Christin Drozd, Allegan Eric Koglin, Port Hope; Andrew Rebottaro, Tecumseh; Taylor Schramski, North Huron; Morgan Smalley, North Huron.
College students: Benjamen Blasher, Belding Michigan State; Matthew Colvin, Prescott, Michigan State; Abbey Feldpausch, Fowler, Michigan State; Garit Hayward, Bay City, Michigan State; Karlie Goretski, Kinde, Michigan State; Addison Spolyar, Litchfield, Michigan State; Katharine Thelen, St. Johns, Olivet College; Taylor Truckey, Sherwood, Michigan State.
"These students will be recognized at the MCGA Annual Meeting in January 2014. Hopefully that will encourage them to become more involved with the MCGA on a local, state and national level," Breitmeyer says. "The MCGA board of directors looks at this scholarship program as a way to give back to our members while promoting higher education and leadership opportunities for young adults."
