If you show cattle, own even just one calf, or maybe even if you jest eat beef, you ought to consider attending the 22nd annual Hoosier Beef Congress. It's definitely a 'happening' in the Hoosier state, featuring the largest annual cattle show held in Indiana nearly every year.
This year's event runs Dec. 5 through Dec. 7 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Sponsored by the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, this huge event is expected to draw over 1,000 youth exhibitors this year. Most of these kids will show cattle. Some will compete in other activities during the Congress, including judging events.
New for '08 is online registration for the Hoosier Beef Congress. Check it out by visiting: www.hoosierbeefcongress.com. Click on 'online registration.' Once there, you can register for both the cattle show and showmanship. Officials believe this will speed up the process when the actual event occurs in just a few, short weeks.
Also for the first time, IBCA offers a rookie program for first-time attendees at Hoosier Beef Congress. Trophies and special recognition will be available for showmen who qualify as rookies at this event.
That's not all that's new for '08. Belted Galloways will be included as a breed division. Doug Abney, Bargersville, will serve as the breed manager, His family recently returned from a successful trip to Wisconsin, exhibiting Belted Galloways from their own herd. Other breeds included in the show are: Angus, Charolais, Chianina, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Red Poll, Salers, Shorthorn and Simmental. Commercial heifers and crossbred steers are also part of the show. Many breed sales will also occur over the three-day show weekend.
