Learn More About Beef Breeds At Breed Association Exhibits

Published on: Sep 5, 2013

Nebraska is the Beef State, and many of the major beef breeds found on the state's farms and ranches are represented at Husker Harvest Days. Several breed associations, like Nebraska Angus Association, Nebraska Hereford Association, Nebraska Simmental Association, Nebraska Charolais Association, Nebraska Red Angus Association and the Gelbvieh Association of Nebraska have booths and exhibits in the northwest section of the HHD grounds, within sight of the Livestock Industries Building, where live cattle-handling demonstrations take place. Several individual ranches and breeding stock producers from these and other breeds bring animals to HHD every year.

Nebraska Hereford Association, which includes the former Polled Hereford Association, has been a regular exhibitor at HHD since the early days. Retiring organization secretary/manager Joe Brockman of Lawrence, was involved in the HHD committee for his group before he headed up the beef breed association. "We have a wide variety of individual ranches and breeders who exhibit their cattle every year," says Brockman. "We've also been serving beef samples of Certified Hereford Beef at our booth."

Brockman says that many visitors return every year for the beef samples, and enjoy visiting with the producers as well. FFA members often stop by the Hereford exhibit to interview individual breeders and learn more about their cattle.

Nebraska Angus Association has also been exhibiting at HHD from the beginning. Typically, up to eight association members exhibit a variety of genetics and ages of Angus cattle under their big red and white tent. The group offers handouts for all ages, pictures and coloring sheets for children, and information that is useful for 4-H and FFA members. They also distribute membership information, calving book calendars and information about the Certified Angus Beef program.

"HHD is a premier show to display genetics from some of our state's leading breeding programs," says Nebraska Angus Association president, Clayton Glause of Fremont. "HHD allows our member exhibitors to interact with visitors and an opportunity to talk about membership offerings. Visitors are welcome to come and view a sampling of what our state's breeders have to offer."

All of the breed associations and individual ranches and breeders exhibiting at HHD offer materials about their genetics and an opportunity view that genetics up close in the cattle they bring for exhibition.
