The corn has been harvested and the yield calculated. Your job is to put all the clues from articles in the magazine and on the Web together and come up with what you think is the best guess. The top three winners who guess closest to the actual yield of dry corn per acre will win seed corn for 2014 from Seed Consultants, Inc.
Here's a quick recap of the year in this field. It's a field that features somewhat poorly drained to poorly drained soils, with only old tile running across a few spots. It's on the lsit for tile, but it hasn't been installed yet.
The corn was planted at just over 30,000 seeds per acre on May 2 and May 3 into good soil conditions. Conventional tillage was used to plant the field. A non-GMO Seed Consultants hybrid was planted. Some nitrogen was applied as starter at planting.
The field was sidedressed around the first of June. As it turns out, there was an issue with the applicator, so about 15 pounds per acre short of the goal was applied. Total N applied was about 160 pounds per acre. The field was in soybeans in 2012.
There was little disease pressure. A fungicide was applied. There was evidence of some corn borer feeding, and there were a few dropped ears at harvest,. Most of them were tracked directly to tunneling into the ear shank by corn borers. One set of end rows was compacted with so-so weed control. The other set of end rows were much closer to normal.
Nitrogen deficiency showed up about the time it got very dry in early August. Some kernel tips aborted.
