Farmers interested in learning about the benefits of raising cattle under roof are invited to attend an open house at the Jim Thoma farm on Friday, August 23 from 11:00 a.m.  to 2:00 p.m. The Thoma farm is located at 11870 Fox Road near Jesup, Iowa. The event, located in eastern Iowa just east of Waterloo, is open to the public and a complimentary lunch will be provided.

The open house will showcase the economic development new livestock farms create while highlighting how modern livestock buildings enhance animal care and safeguard the environment. For example, Thoma's open house will feature a new 1,200-head deep-pitted cattle barn complete with rubber mats on the slats for cattle comfort.

The Thoma family will offer tours of the new facility, explain how livestock is raised and demonstrate the latest technology used in cattle feeding.

"This is a perfect opportunity for farmers to see the benefits of raising cattle under roof and talk directly to farmers who are using it successfully," says Brian Waddingham, executive director of the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers.  "It's also a great opportunity for community members to learn more about the benefits of livestock to their community and get their questions answered directly from the farmer."

You can get your questions answered regarding rules and regulations on livestock agriculture

Experts from CSIF will also be available to provide insight into interpreting rules and regulations impacting animal agriculture, enhancing relationships with neighbors and choosing good locations for new barns and feedlots. CSIF information assistance and consultation is available to farm families at no charge.

The open house is sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers, Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Black Hawk County Cattlemen and local support from area agribusinesses and other organizations. CSIF is a non-profit organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules and regulations, guidance on good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations and tips on how to protect the environment at no cost.
