A farmer from New Providence, Dan Cook, was elected chairman of the Iowa Beef Industry Council at the IBIC's February board meeting. Cook will lead the group of producers who oversee the beef checkoff program for Iowa's 30,000 cattle producers.
Elaine Utesch of Correctionville was re-elected vice-chairman; secretary is Roger Brummett of Bedford, and treasurer is Scott Niess of Osage. Stan Zylstra of Hull is also a director. These five directors were elected by cattle producers at the annual meeting in January.
Other members serving on the IBIC executive committee are Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture; Wendy Wintersteen, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University; and Phil Schooley of Bloomfield, representing the Iowa Livestock Market Association.
New one-year director is seated on IBIC
Newly appointed for a one-year term is Ken Birker of Vinton, who joins other one-year appointees Doug Rock, Swea City; Mike Curran, Chariton; Malcolm Miller, Beaman; and Bob Henderson, Albia. Terri Carstensen, Odebolt; Scott McGregor, Nashua; Tom Hotz, Lone Tree; Helen Wiese, Manning, serve as one-year appointees and represent Iowa on the Federation of State Beef Councils. Iowa's Beef Board directors, appointed by the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, include Will Frazee, Emerson; Dan Petersen, Muscatine; and Jeff Clausen, Carson.
Iowans provide leadership on national beef committees
Beef producers who represent Iowa on national beef promotion committees serve in leadership positions.
Terri Carstensen, Odebolt, chairs the Advertising Committee and was elected as Region III vice-president of the Federation of State Beef Councils; Helen Wiese, Manning, chairs the Retail Committee; Jeff Clausen, Carson and a Beef Board member, chairs the Beef Safety Committee; Scott McGregor, Nashua, is vice-chair of the Foodservice Committee. Will Frazee, Emerson, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Cattlemen's Beef Board.
The Iowa Beef Industry Council administers the Iowa portion of the national beef checkoff. The 2009-2010 Iowa budget will invest about $1.6 million in state and national beef promotion, research, consumer information and industry information programs. In addition, Iowa forwards about $1.6 million to the National Cattlemen's Beef Board to be distributed to national beef promotion programs to market beef domestically and internationally.
