The Global Impact STEM Academy Board has appointed Carl Berg as the interim director of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics school. The Global Impact STEM Academy was designed to create educational opportunities through applied learning and hands-on problem solving curriculum in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Springfield STEM concept for biosciences is the first of its kind in the nation to directly link education with economic development and job growth in agricultural biosciences through a public institution.

Berg fills the STEM Academy's first full-time position. The board selected Berg from a small pool of nominees with proven administrative experience in education. Berg served as superintendent at Tolles Career Center, and while superintendent at Miamisburg, he received the Superintendent Outstanding Performance Award in 1999.

"I like to say I'm a pragmatic idealist," says Berg. "My whole career, I've tried to align what's right with what's possible. Our state has set the groundwork for a new model of education, and I am thrilled to be part of seeing this come to fruition in Springfield."

Berg will serve as the head decision-maker for the STEM Academy until a long-term superintendent is selected from a national pool of candidates. His responsibilities will include recruiting students and faculty, overseeing facility decisions and updates, and implementing curriculum outlined by a curriculum committee chaired by Ohio State University's Vice Provost for Academic Programs.

"Carl knows schools and he knows this community," says David Hopkins, president of Wright State University and vice chairman of the STEM Academy Board. "His 40-plus years of experience in education administration along with his family ties to the local community make  him a perfect fit for this position."

Berg's first tasks as interim director involve developing the school's operating budget, reviewing plans set up by the board and determining an official opening date for the school.
