Following a successful implementation of three hydroponic growing facilities, including a recent 20,000sf facility on the edge of the Mohave Desert, Solsustech Inc., Manna, Calif. has announced commercial availability of a complete "floating produce" system under the name Got Produce?. Since soil is no longer a requirement, growers are able to avoid the costs and negative externalities of traditional growing methods, including the use of Methyl Iodide and other chemicals.
Due to results that exceeded expectations, the company is now designing commercially-viable systems for large growers, including international customers as far away as Senegal. "This breakthrough in hydroponic technology creates an exceptionally nutritious product with excellent flavor" says Deborah Walliser, Executive Director of Solsustech. The system produces more food in less space in a shorter period of time and does not rely on methyl iodide or other controversial chemicals. "This proprietary system can be built in any region of the world at a much lower cost than traditional greenhouses," says Walliser.
Crops grown in the hydroponic greenhouses include tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, eggplant, chilies, peppers and leafy greens. Tomato varieties produced 12 times the amount of tomatoes grown in traditional "dirt" grown tomatoes, and went from seed to harvest in about 90 days and continued to produce fruit every day. At a growing facility in Vicksburg, Ariz., lettuce was grown three times as fast as soil-grown lettuce, with a plant density of 40 head per square foot per year. Equally impressive was the water savings; compared with traditional field methods, the Solsustech solution uses only 2% of the water, a savings of over 40 gallons per head per year.
By floating the plants in an enclosed, temperature-controlled environment, Solsustech has perfected computer-regulated plant nutrition and temperature requirements. The result is a superior product that allows growers to control flavor and texture at very competitive rates by using customized recipes. The system reduces inputs so dramatically that growers using the system usually qualify for Low Carbon Footprint Certification (LCF).
The Solsustech system includes smart technology systems that enable growers to monitor irrigation, nutrient, pollination, insects, CO2, temperature, and other factors relevant to the growing environment. The system is effective for most commercial crops, including vining crops such as tomatoes, berries and leafy crops such as basil, spinach and arugula. Because the system generates approximately 15 crops per year, harvest takes place on a daily basis.
