Grazing Takes Center Stage At Small-Farm Workshop

U of I's upcoming small farm field day will focus on pasture management and grazing. The event is June 15.

Grazing methods and pasture management will be two topics covered at the upcoming field day on Kraal Farm, a small subsistence farm used primarily for raising animals (beef, sheep, goats, and chickens) and vegetable crops, said University of Illinois Extension educator Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant.

The field day will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. A noon meal will be provided featuring goat and lamb. Cavanaugh-Grant also said participants should bring a folding chair.

Topics covered during the field day will include pasture and livestock management as well as woodland management.

"See how an intensive grazing system on just 10 acres with minimal labor costs survives and flourishes," Cavanaugh-Grant says. "At Kraal Farm, all animals are pasture-raised using rotational grazing methods, alternating periods of grazing and rest for the paddocks throughout the grazing season. The paddocks are divided into smaller kraals of various sizes in order to implement flash grazing, stockpiling, and other techniques that maximize pasture usage."

The Oxford Dictionary defines a kraal (Dutch, from Portuguese curral or coral) as a traditional African village of huts, typically enclosed by a fence. It can also be used as another term for homestead and/or an enclosure for cattle or sheep, she said.
