If you have the day free, you might want to consider heading to the tiny town of Muscotah in western Atchison County, where it will be Joe Tinker Day, celebrating the life of baseball star Joe Tinker.
Activities of the day will include a vintage baseball game between Wichita's Old Cowtown Baseball team and the Hodgeman Nine from southwest Kansas. The teams will square off in 1870s uniforms and follow rules of that era.
Tinker was born in Muscotah in 1880 and became famous as a shortstop for the World Series winning Chicago Cubs in 1907 and 1908. He was part of a famous double play combination of Tiner to Evers to Chance that helped the Cubs win the Series. All three entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
Tinker's grandson, Jay and two great-grandsons will be attending the game. They will be traveling to Muscotah from their home in Baltimore and will hold a question and answer session with visitors of the day at 1 p.m. The event will be held in the city building below the new water tower on Kansas Street.
At 4 p.m. some special presentations will be made at home plate prior to the start of the game. The Tinkers will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The vintage teams will interact with the audience during the game. Hot dogs, chips, pop, peanuts, and CrackerJack will be available during the game. After the game, ice cream and apple pie and apple crisp will be sold in the city building. Artists Erika Nelson and Matthew Farley will be working on a historical baseball mural during the game.
A local game will be played at 3 p.m. The public is invited to also visit the World's Largest Baseball at U.S. 159 and Kansas Street. The Muscotah Mercantile will be open at 107 W. 2nd. Limited souvenir t-shirts and fans will be sold. There is no charge to attend the game but the public should bring lawn chairs. There are no bleachers.
As a tool for sustaining the community, Muscotah has been working on Joe Tinker-themed attractions with support from the Kansas Sampler Foundation and network.
