On Thursday the Senate followed the lead of the House, passing by unanimous consent a one-week extension of the 2002 Farm Bill. However; the Farm Bill Conference Committee first postponed and then canceled the meeting they had scheduled during the afternoon. No announcement was made regarding the reason for the postponement or cancellation. There was also no statement on potential meetings on Friday. The House was not scheduled to be in session on Friday.
So as it stands, there is a one-week farm bill extension that goes to Friday, April 25 that has passed both chambers of Congress; it's unclear whether President Bush will sign that extension; and the current farm bill expires at midnight Friday. It all adds up to more questions than answers.
