FAQ: Where can I get instruction on using ISU’s ACRE Calculator, to help me figure out whether or not to sign up for USDA’s ACRE program for 2009?

Answer: Provided by Iowa State University Extension

Both farmers and landowners interested in learning more about USDA’s new Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program can benefit from using the ISU ACRE Calculator. It can help you figure out whether or not it would likely pay for your farm, or which farms in your operation, to enroll in USDA’s new ACRE option for 2009. First, you sign up for USDA’s Direct and Countercyclical Program (DCP) at your local FSA office. Then you decide whether or not to enroll in ACRE.

ACRE is an election made by farmers and landowners by FSA farm number. The deadline for the 2009 sign-up is August 14. The process includes the need for establishing of 5-year farm benchmark yield or allowing a plug yield that represents 95% of the county average.

ISU Extension farm management specialist Steven Johnson will provide hands-on training for this 3-hour workshop. Participants are asked to bring specific information pertaining to at least one FSA farm: CC base acres, CC yields and average farm yields for 2004 through 2008. In addition, you’ll need to estimate the farm’s crop insurance premium paid for both corn and soybeans in 2009.

There will be 5 workshop sites offered across Central Iowa beginning July 13. All sessions are open to the public. There is a registration fee of $25 payable to the host community college. Please pre-register by phone on or before Friday July 10.
