Dairy farms and students interested in participating in the 2014 On-Farm Dairy Internship program are encouraged to apply by January 15. The program is offered by Pennsylvania's Center for Dairy Excellence, Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Dairymen's Association.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for college-aged students to gain insight into herd management, dairy production and other key areas of a dairy business by working on a progressive dairy farm," says Emily Yeiser, dairy initiatives manager for the Center for Dairy Excellence, which coordinates the program. "Students who have participated in the past have benefited tremendously from the first-hand experience received during their internships."

Farms and students are eligible for up to $2,000 in grant funding to students participating. The program offsets the cost of the 10 to 12 week internship. It provides farms with highly skilled interns interested in dairy production and offers students internships that are competitive with those offered by allied industries.

Prospective interns must be students attending a Pennsylvania university, a Pennsylvania resident attending an out-of-state school, a recently-graduated Pennsylvania resident or a student affiliated with a PDMP member farm with an interest in dairy production.

Participating farms may be located within or outside of Pennsylvania. Producers are encouraged to expose their intern to all aspects of a successful, progressive dairy operation to guide the students' eventual return to dairy production.

Intern applicants will be matched with interested farms by a committee representing the three organizations. Farms will be provided with the final approval regarding their intern for the summer. Accepted applicants will be notified by February 15.
