Deadline Nears to Enter Corn Yield Contests

Cash prizes offered for first, second and third place winners.

Published on: Aug 12, 2010

Great corn deserves recognition and four local Wisconsin corn grower organizations are recognizing top-yielding farmers with cash prizes through new, county-level corn-yield contests.

Cash prizes are being offered of $500 for first place, $250 second place and $100 third place for farmers who enter yield contests being hosted by county corn grower groups in the following organizations: Columbia County Corn Growers; Juneau/Adams/Marquette (JAM) Corn Growers; Dodge/Fond du Lac Corn Growers; Rock/Walworth/Jefferson Corn Growers.

Entry in these county-level corn contests is free, but farmers must be current members of the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association and only one entry per member will be accepted. A simple one-page entry form is available from University Extension agents in the participating counties or through the Wisconsin Corn Program Office. The entry form and WCGA membership forms are posted online at www.wicorn.org and must be filed by Sept. 1 to participate.

Verify yields

Yield verification at harvest for the contest must be supervised by either a county Extension agent or a professional agricultural consultant and can be confirmed by using either a weigh wagon or truck scale. A harvest form must be submitted to be considered for a prize and will be sent to everyone submitting an entry form. County winners may be asked to participate in a panel discussion during the 2011 Corn/Soy Expo and might be offered free meeting registration as additional compensation.

The WCGA represents the interest of state corn growers in the growing and managing of corn grown both for on-farm feeding and commercial sale. WCGA works with other organizations in areas of mutual concern, including sustainability, biotech issues, resistance management, farmland valuation, conservation, and the environment. WCGA brings together corn growers to provide information and education at regional corn conferences and the annual Wisconsin Corn/Soy EXPO. As part of the National Corn Growers Association, WCGA represents corn grower interests nationally and internationally and also sponsors the national corn yield contest.
