Dare to Dairy

The Heins family is out to prove that dairies are still a viable business in Missouri.

June is National Dairy Month and we are proud to present an innovative Missouri dairy in a special Web Exclusive video. The dairy is owned and operated by the Heins family of Higginsville.

Most dairy producers wouldn't dare build new facilities and expand cow numbers in times of an industry downturn. The Heins family is the exception. In fact, the business-savvy dairy producers found that 2009-2010 has been the opportune time. A modern building with state-of-the-art milking parlor, milk storage tanks and office, plus three 40-foot-by-461-foot free-stall buildings now sit atop a parcel of land on their Lafayette County farm.

The facilities are well planned, with extra energy, safety and labor efficiencies built in. Recycling of sand bedding and wastewater and a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan are examples of the Heins family's commitment to environmental stewardship.
