California State University, Chico, College of Agriculture announces plans to host the 2008 Organic Dairy Conference at the University's Agriculture Teaching and Research Center on March 25-26, 2008.

The two-day event will feature nationally recognized speakers on holistic herd health with an emphasis on milk quality and organic methods to maximize pasture productivity and minimize grain inputs. Speakers include Dr. Paul Dettloff, holistic dairy practitioner, LaFarge, Wis.; Dr. Tina Johnson, certified veterinary acupuncturist, Newburg Veterinary Hospital, Newburg, Ore.; Gary Zimmer, agronomist and president and founder of Mid-Western Bio-Ag Services; and Jerry Brunetti, animal nutritionist and founder of Agri-Dynamics, Inc.

"In addition to nationally recognized speakers, we plan to host a producer panel with some of the best dairy grazers in the Western United States," says Dr. Cindy Daley, professor of Animal Science at CSU, Chico, who also serves as the conference coordinator for the 2008 event. "There are a number of very successful dairy producers using improved pastures as a major component of their ration, who maintain respectable/profitable milk production yields. These are the dairymen we plan to feature at this year's conference as we discuss successful sustainable methods to lowering grain inputs."

The 2008 Conference will also feature an Organic Trade Show featuring organically certified product lines, OMRI-approved soil amendments, organic seed and fertilizers, certification agents, and pasture equipment dealers.

Wednesday's dairy tour will be hosted by Mark Alderson, a seasoned Gerber dairy producer who has successfully grazed milk cows for decades using strategic combinations of both cool- and warm-season pasture species and intensive grazing management. Mark and his partner/neighbor Travis Cardoza, will provide a guided tour of their operations.

The conference is free to dairy producers in the Western Region who pre-register by March 1. Non producers and allied industries can register individuals for $100/person (includes lunch and dinner), and students receive a 50% discount with valid student ID.
