Corn, Cattle and Energy Workshop Set

Dakota beef producers to talk about how they can co-exist with ethanol.

Learning how to manage a beef cattle operation in an ethanol world at the Corn, Cattle and Energy workshop Aug. 23 at the Days Inn-Grand Dakota Lodge in Dickinson, N.D.

"This program will provide beef cattle producers and allied industry personnel with valuable information on how to manage their businesses in an area of increasing corn demand from energy producers," says Greg Lardy, North Dakota State University Extension Service beef cattle specialist.

The event starts at 10 a.m. Morning session times, topics and speakers are:

  • 10:05 a.m., Corn, Cattle and Energy Market: Why They Are Intertwined and Why They Are Going to Be Volatile – Tim Petry, NDSU Extension livestock economist
  • 11 a.m., Natural Programs: What Are Consumers Saying and What is It Going to Cost You to Participate – Steve Paisley, University of Wyoming Animal Science Department.

Participants will be able to attend three of four breakout sessions at 1 and 3:30 p.m. The 1 p.m. breakout sessions and speakers are:

  • Bovine Viral Diarrhea – Russ Daly, South Dakota State University Veterinary Science Department
  • Contracting Dried Distillers Grains – Keith Finney, commodities manager, Red Trail Energy, Richardton
  • Transferring Assets – Randy McKee, registered financial consultant, Estate Planning Services Inc.
    -Preharvest Impacts on Carcass Quality – Rob Maddock, NDSU Animal Science Department

The 3:30 p.m. breakout sessions and speakers are:

  • Managing Your Health Program to Reduce Morbidity – Gerry Stokka, Pfizer Animal Health
  • Nutritional Strategies to Reduce Morbidity – Rachel Endecott, Montana State University Animal and Range Sciences Department
  • Feeding Ethanol Byproducts – Cody Wright, SDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department
  • Factors Determining Value of Feeder Calves – Lardy

The event also will include a lunch buffet at noon, social at 5:30 p.m. and steak dinner at 6, followed by a producer panel discussion of labor issues on beef cattle operations.

Registration is $45 per person.

The 4-State Ruminant Consortium is funding this event. The consortium consists of four land-grant universities - NDSU, Montana State, SDSU and the University of Wyoming. They implement research and Extension programs that integrate crop and livestock resources in the semiarid northern Great Plains.
